Your 4-year-old can't steer a kart on the Switch yet, but can bounce off the sofa cushions for an hour. The controller lands on the rug within a minute. So you start to wonder about Nex Playground, and whether the Switch you might already own could do the same job.
The short answer: Nex Playground vs Switch comes down to what your child holds. Nex is a camera box for the TV with no controller, and Nex recommends it for ages 5 and up. Most Switch motion games use a Joy-Con or a phone. On Switch 2, a camera sold separately adds full-body play to select minigames. ESRB ratings run from E to E10+.
We make Fun Motion Labs, so weigh our entry with that in mind. We don't make or sell either of these. This Nex Playground vs Switch comparison uses only Nex's, Nintendo's, Ubisoft's and the ESRB's own pages. Prices and availability checked on 31 October 2026, in US dollars.
Nex Playground vs Switch at a glance
Nex Playground vs Nintendo Switch is a choice between two kinds of box. Nex is a camera console with no controller. The Switch is a general games console, and its motion games mostly use a controller, a phone or, on Switch 2, an extra camera.
| Question | Nex Playground | Switch or Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | The Nex box and a TV with HDMI | A Switch or Switch 2 and a game. For camera play, a Switch 2 and a USB-C camera, sold separately |
| What's in their hands | Nothing. Nex says "No controllers needed" | Joy-Con (Switch Sports), Joy-Con in a ring (Ring Fit), a phone (Just Dance), nothing in camera minigames |
| Upfront cost (US, checked 31 Oct 2026) | $299 with 5 games | Switch 2 about $500 (news reports); bundle with Switch Sports Resort $529.99. Games: Switch Sports $39.99, Just Dance 2026 Edition $49.99, Ring Fit $79.99, Jamboree TV $79.99 |
| Maker's age guide or ESRB rating | "We recommend 5 and up" | Just Dance and Jamboree TV: E. Switch Sports, Switch Sports Resort and Ring Fit: E10+ |
| How the body moves (maker's description) | "Uses body motion" in front of the camera | Swinging Joy-Con; jogging in place and squats (Ring Fit); dancing; full-body moves in select camera minigames |
| Players at once | Up to 4, depending on the game | Switch Sports 1 to 4; Ring Fit 1; Just Dance up to 6; Jamboree TV 1 to 4 |
| Space | About 1.8 x 1.8 m (6 x 6 ft) | Not stated on the pages we checked |
A few details sit behind those rows. In Nex's multiplayer games nobody needs a controller, Nex says. On the Switch, each extra player in Switch Sports or Switch Sports Resort needs their own controller, and Resort runs only on Switch 2. On a Switch 2, Ring Fit needs the older controllers, because the new Joy-Con 2 can't attach to its ring, Nintendo says.
Nex says its motion tracking happens on the device and that no video or audio is saved (Nex Safety & Privacy). That's the maker's statement, not an independent check.
Nex Playground is a good fit if your child is 5 or older and you'd like nothing in their hands. Check first that you're happy with five games, or with paying for the optional Play Pass that opens the rest.
The Switch route is a good fit if you own or want a general games console and your child can hold a controller. Check first that the E10+ ratings on Switch Sports and Ring Fit suit you, and remember the Switch 2 camera costs extra.
We haven't tested either one with a young child, which is a real limit here. We can't tell you how well each follows a small, wriggly player.
Which one for a 4 or 5 year old who can't use a controller yet?
For a 4 or 5 year old who can't use a controller yet, the main difference is the hands. Nex needs nothing in them. Most Switch motion games need a controller held and pressed at the right moment.
If the controller keeps flying across the room, that's a normal stage at this age.
Nex Playground vs Switch for kids under 5 is where the age labels matter most. Nex's own line is "We recommend 5 and up." It adds that 3 and 4 year olds can enjoy more of the games when a grown-up or older sibling plays with them. So a child in pre-K (reception in the UK) may need you on the floor too.
On the Switch side, the ESRB rates Just Dance 2026 Edition and Jamboree TV E for Everyone. It rates Switch Sports and Ring Fit E10+, which means 10 and up. The rating describes the content. How it fits your child is your call.
On the Switch, Just Dance can use a phone's camera in Camera Controller Mode, which follows one dancer. Jamboree TV's camera minigames need nothing in the hand, but they are select minigames inside a bigger party game.
How long to play is a separate question, and screen time guidance by age has the numbers.
Which Switch 2 camera games use the whole body?
On Switch 2, the game Nintendo lists for full-body camera play is Super Mario Party Jamboree, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV. Even there, the camera only works in select minigames.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera came out in June 2025 and is sold separately. It plugs into the console's USB-C port for video chat and "other in-game camera features," and it has a sliding privacy shutter. Nintendo says other compatible USB-C cameras can work too.
Jamboree TV is $79.99 on the US Nintendo store, rated E, for 1 to 4 players on one console. Nintendo says the camera can "capture player movements to enable full-body motion controls in select minigames," including the camera minigames in Bowser Live. Its online features need a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
If you're weighing Nex Playground vs Switch 2 camera play, the overlap is small. It's some minigames in one party game, next to a box where every game is played by moving in front of the camera.
For any other Switch 2 game, its Nintendo store page lists camera features. Nintendo's pages don't say whether camera images are processed on the console, so we can't compare its privacy with Nex's statement. We can't compare how well the two cameras track, either.

Nex or Switch: which fits a 3 to 8 year old?
Which fits a 3 to 8 year old mostly depends on their age and on what's already plugged into your TV.
- No controller, and your child is 5 or older: Nex Playground is built for that.
- We already have a Switch: Just Dance (rated E) is the easy add-on. Switch Sports and Ring Fit are rated E10+.
- You're buying a Switch 2 anyway: the camera adds full-body play to select minigames in Jamboree TV.
- Neither box appeals: see the next section.
Any of these is one extra way to move indoors. None of them replaces outdoor play, sport or free play. There's more on that in whether active video games count as exercise.
Any active game, ours included, can also lose its pull after a few weeks. Buying as a gift? Ask the parents which console, if any, is already under the TV.
If you'd rather not buy either box
If you'd rather not buy a console at all, some motion games run on a Windows or Mac computer with a webcam instead. There are more options in our guide to Nex Playground alternatives.
We make Fun Motion Labs, so weigh our entry with that in mind. Our games download to a Windows or Mac computer with a webcam, then play offline. You only need the internet to download and for online multiplayer. The laptop can plug into the TV by HDMI, and you need about 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft) of space. You buy each game once, with no subscription. Tracking and voice commands run on your computer. Your webcam video is never saved or uploaded.
It's a good fit if you already have the computer and would rather skip a new box. Check the timing first, because we're launching in November 2026, so the games aren't on sale yet. Most are for one player, and the ones for the youngest kids mostly use arms and reaching. Age guides are set per game on our games page.
Try this today
No rush to decide tonight. If you'd like to test the question first, pick one.
- Hand your child a TV remote and watch for a minute. Holding something while moving, and pressing a button now and then, is roughly what most Switch motion games ask.
- Measure the floor in front of the TV. Nex asks for about 1.8 x 1.8 m (6 x 6 ft).
- Add up a year: the box, the games and any subscription.
- Check the rating letter against your own house rules.
The sofa cushions will get bounced on either way. The only question is whether there's a Joy-Con in the air when it happens.
FAQ
Does Just Dance use the Switch 2 camera?
Not that we could find. Ubisoft's launch release for Just Dance: Decades of Hits doesn't mention the Switch 2 camera (checked 31 October 2026). For Switch players, Ubisoft says Camera Controller Mode uses the free Just Dance Controller app on a phone, which follows one dancer's whole body. The Switch 2 Edition of Decades of Hits is due on 10 November 2026, so its store page is the one to check then.
We already have a Switch. Is a Nex worth buying too for a 4-year-old who can't use the Joy-Con yet?
That depends on your child and your budget, so we won't answer it for you. Nex needs nothing in the hand, and Nex recommends it for 5 and up, with a grown-up or sibling joining in for younger kids. It's $299 with five games, and the Play Pass is optional. On the Switch you already own, Just Dance is rated E, and a phone can be the controller.
Do Nex Playground or the Switch games need a subscription?
You don't need one to play the games you buy. Nex's five included games play without a pass. The optional Play Pass, $89 a year or $49 for three months, opens the rest of the library, which Nex puts at more than 60 games. Just Dance+ adds songs for $29.99 a year. Online play on the Switch needs Nintendo Switch Online, $19.99 a year (US prices, checked 31 October 2026).
