Is Nex Playground Worth It? The Facts, Costs and Play Pass

You've read a couple of glowing reviews, then a forum thread where the subscription annoyed someone. Both can be true. At $299, you'd like to know which one sounds more like your house before you decide whether Nex Playground is worth it for you.

The short answer: Is Nex Playground worth it? That depends on your child's age, your floor space and the optional Play Pass. In the US, $299 buys the box and five games. The pass ($49 for three months or $89 a year) opens 60+ more, by Nex's count. Nex recommends ages 5 and up (Nex's US pages, checked 31 October 2026).

We haven't tested Nex Playground ourselves, so this isn't a review. Everything here comes from Nex's own pages and press releases, plus one named independent review (how we check sources). Prices and availability checked on 31 October 2026. We make Fun Motion Labs, so weigh our entry with that in mind.

What do you get for $299?

Nex Playground's $299 price on Nex's US shop buys the camera box, a remote, power and HDMI cables, a magnetic privacy cover and five starter games. The five are Fruit Ninja, Starri, Party Fowl, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe and Go Keeper, and Nex says they stay "free forever."

The box sits by your TV and plugs into it, or into a projector, with one HDMI cable. It doesn't work on a laptop screen. You need WiFi to set it up and download games, and after that, Nex says, games "can be played completely offline." Up to four people can play at once, depending on the game. Based on the maker's description, you play by moving your body, with no controller in hand. Nex asks for "about 6 ft x 6 ft" (1.8 x 1.8 m) of play space.

Is it safe? Nex's Safety & Privacy page says "AI motion tracking happens locally on the device" and "No video or audio is saved or stored." Some games record short clips for replays, but Nex says "those videos are never saved." It also says the console is kidSAFE+ COPPA certified. Those are the maker's own statements, and we haven't seen an outside audit.

Outside the US, the console was £269.99 on Nex's UK page and €319 on its Irish page.

Is Nex Playground a subscription?

Nex Playground isn't a subscription by itself. The five starter games are yours, and the Play Pass is an optional paid add-on for the rest of the library. So you can play Nex Playground without a subscription, but only those five games. Nex's support page puts it plainly: "An active Play Pass is required to access the Play Pass games."

If "subscription" is the word that made you pause, the terms on Nex's Play Pass page are short.

  • Do you have to pay every month? No. There's no monthly plan, and the pass comes as 3 months for $49 or 12 months for $89.
  • One pass covers up to 2 Nex Playground consoles in your home.
  • You can turn off auto-renew, and the pass then runs to the end of the time you paid for. It can't be paused.
  • Refunds are only for your first Play Pass, bought directly from Nex, within 14 days. After that, Nex says, "there will be no refund after cancellation."

We make Fun Motion Labs. If you'd rather skip subscriptions altogether, our motion games for Windows and Mac computers are bought once, game by game. They're launching in November 2026 and aren't on sale yet.

Is the Play Pass worth it? The first-year cost

At Nex's US list prices, a first year of Nex Playground costs $299 with no pass. With one 3-month pass it's $348, and with a 12-month pass it's $388.

First year US UK Ireland
Box only (5 games) $299 £269.99 €319
Box + one 3-month pass $348 £314.99 €368
Box + one 12-month pass $388 £359.99 €418
Box + four 3-month passes $495 £449.99 €515

Box prices are from Nex's US, UK and Irish shop pages, checked 31 October 2026. UK and Irish pass prices are Nex's June 2026 launch prices (£45 or £90, €49 or €99). Sale and shop prices differ, and they tend to move in November.

A few things stand out. Four 3-month passes cost more over a year than one 12-month pass. In year two you pay for the pass only: $89, £90 or €99 at these prices. And one pass covers two consoles in the same home.

So is the Nex Playground subscription worth the money? That turns on whether five games will be enough for your kids. Mumsnet's tester felt the pass "feels necessary to get the most from the console." That's one family's view. If you expect to want the full library, the 12-month row is the one to plan around.

Is Nex Playground good for kids aged 3 to 8?

Nex recommends Nex Playground for ages 5 and up. For 3 and 4 year olds (nursery age in the UK), Nex says they "will be able to enjoy a bigger variety of the games if a grown-up or older sibling plays with them."

So is it worth it for a 3-year-old? Nex's own wording is the best answer we can give. The Mumsnet tester didn't try it with children under 5, and we haven't either. Say you have a 4-year-old and a 7-year-old. The older one is inside Nex's age range, and the younger one may get more from it with someone playing alongside.

Ratings help a little. In the UK and Ireland, the starter bundle is rated PEGI 3, Nex said at launch. That rating covers the starter bundle only; Play Pass games may differ. In Germany, Techbook reported in October 2026 that the starter pack and the Play Pass catalog are rated USK 6.

Space can be the harder limit in a small home. If 1.8 x 1.8 m is hard to find, these active play ideas for small apartments need less.

Active games are one extra way to move, not a stand-in for outdoor play, sport or free play. Whether they count as exercise is a separate question we looked at.

Will they get bored of it? What one tester found

One parent tester for Mumsnet (October 2026) found that "Movements are generally very well detected." The same tester felt the Play Pass "feels necessary" and that the five included games "could become repetitive fairly quickly."

The review also flags space: "You need enough space for the camera to see the whole body of the player." Two players needed more floor, and the camera sometimes picked up people in the background.

That's one family over three weeks, and it's the only independent review in our notes. It can't tell you how your child will take to it. Any new game can lose its pull after a few weeks. And most camera games track best in decent light, on a clear floor, with the player fully in view.

So, is Nex Playground worth it for your family?

Six questions decide whether Nex Playground is worth it for your family: age, space, a TV, the Play Pass, your country and privacy.

  1. Is your child 5 or older, or will a grown-up or older sibling play along?
  2. Do you have about 1.8 x 1.8 m (6 x 6 ft) of clear floor in front of the TV?
  3. Do you have a TV with a spare HDMI port, and WiFi for setup?
  4. Would you pay about $89 (£90, €99) a year for the full library, or are five games enough?
  5. Is it sold where you live? Nex's site covers the three countries in the table, plus Canada, and Nex's own web shop ships only to US addresses.
  6. Have you read Nex's privacy page and felt comfortable with it?

From the facts, Nex suits families who want a box that lives by the TV and lets up to four people play together. With the pass, it also has characters kids know, like Bluey. It suits less well if you'd rather not add a box or a yearly pass.

The glowing reviews and that forum thread can stay open in their tabs. Your six answers say more about your living room than either of them.

If you're still weighing it up, we've compared Nex Playground with the Switch for young kids and rounded up other motion games to consider.

FAQ

Is Nex Playground for adults too?

Nex sells Nex Playground as a family console and recommends it for ages 5 and up, with no upper age given. Up to four people can play at once, though "player count varies by game," Nex says, and multiplayer games don't need extra controllers. Nex makes no separate claim about adults playing on their own, and the one review we cite looked at a family.

Is Nex Playground FSA or HSA eligible?

Nex's US shop marks Nex Playground "HSA / FSA Eligible" (checked 31 October 2026). That's Nex's own label, and it applies in the US only. Whether your account will pay for it depends on your plan, so your plan provider is the one to ask. We can't give tax or benefits advice.

What happens when the Play Pass runs out?

When a Play Pass runs out, Nex says you keep the five starter games, and "Your game progress and saved data are stored locally on your device." The Play Pass games lock until you renew. Renewing "will restore access to the games you previously enjoyed," according to Nex's help center (help centre in the UK).
